Somalia Showcases an “Untapped Energy Frontier” at IMAGE 2025 in Houston

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia joined national energy leaders at the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience and Energy (IMAGE) to advance partnerships with U.S. oil and gas companies. Ambassador Dahir Hassan Abdi accompanied H.E. Minister Dahir Shire of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Eng. Abdulkadir Mohamud, CEO of the Somali Petroleum Authority, for a series of strategic engagements aimed at strengthening Somalia–U.S. energy security.

Partitioning Somalia Will Not Bring Peace to the Horn of Africa

Somalia is a sovereign state, a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the East African Economic Community. Its borders are internationally recognized and protected under international law, including the UN Charter and the AU’s founding principle of respecting post-colonial boundaries. Proposals to partition Somalia contradict these principles and threaten to destabilize not only Somalia but the wider continent.

Throughout history, great nations have often been called upon to make difficult decisions that influence the fate of entire regions. Today, the United States faces such a moment in its policy towards Somalia. In an era of shifting alliances and heightened global competition, America’s interests in the Horn of Africa will be best served by continuing to support Somalia’s territorial integrity. By doing so, the United States reinforces its strategic position and builds on its longstanding record of effective security cooperation with Somalia—a partnership that has advanced counterterrorism efforts and bolstered regional stability.
