Somalia: A Week of Diplomatic Leadership at the UN General Assembly (UNGA79)

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Washington, D.C., reflects on an impactful week at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Under the leadership of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Somalia actively engaged with the international community, reaffirming its commitment to peace, security, and development.

Throughout the session, Somalia’s leadership and vision were evident, as it voiced the aspirations of its people and the unwavering dedication of its government to secure a prosperous future. The international community expressed its appreciation for the resilience of the Somali people and recognized that lasting peace in Somalia is essential not only for the nation itself but for the stability of the entire Horn of Africa.

Somalia’s FM Ahmed Moalim Fiqi met with the IGAD Executive Secretary during #UNGA79 to discuss strengthening regional cooperation and addressing peace, security, and key challenges in the Horn of Africa.
FM Ahmed Moalim Fiqi met with Egypt’s FM Badr Abdelatty and Eritrea’s FM Osman Saleh at the sidelines of #UNGA79 to discuss peace, security, and cooperation, reaffirming commitment to stronger ties.
FM Ahmed Moalim Fiqi had a constructive meeting with FM Hakan Fidan at the Turkish House in NY. Discussions focused on advancing the Ankara Dialogue & strengthening bilateral relations under Türkiye’s leadership for meaningful outcomes.

Key discussions during the week included Somalia’s stance on recent regional developments, particularly mobilizing diplomatic allies to address the illegal MoU of Ethiopia violating Somalia’s territorial integrity. Moreover, Somalia sought strategic partnerships with Arab leadership, engaged in more than 15 bilateral sessions, and worked closely with the Quad: the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the African Union, to shape a robust post-ATMIS framework. This framework aims to ensure a smooth transition as Somalia gradually assumes full responsibility for its national security, paving the way for a stable and secure future.

Somalia also took the opportunity to present its key priorities for the non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term. With a clear and strategic vision, Somalia looks forward to collaborating with the international community to achieve these shared goals and contribute meaningfully to global peace and security.

Somalia held constructive discussions with India aimed at establishing consular services in Mogadishu to better serve Somali citizens. In parallel, Somalia engaged with Sudan to explore joint efforts in promoting regional stability and fostering stronger diplomatic ties.

FM Ahmed Moalim Fiqi met with UK Minister for Int’l Development, H.E. Anneliese Dodds, at #UNGA79 to discuss strengthening Somalia-UK development cooperation, post-ATMIS goals, and advancing bilateral ties for Somalia’s progress.
FM Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi met with Canada’s Minister for International Development, Hon. Ahmed Hussien, to enhance Somalia-Canada relations, focusing on economic development, climate finance, agriculture, trade, and human resource development.
FM Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi met with UNCTED to strengthen efforts against terrorism and violent extremism. Somalia’s progress in liberating areas from terrorist control was commended, with UNCTED pledging further support.

Somalia concluded its week in New York as a recovering nation, positioned as a key player on the international stage with immense potential for regional and global impact. The efforts of H.E. Ambassador Fiqi and the Somali delegation underscore the country’s steadfast progress and ambition as it charts its path toward a brighter future.
