Human Rights and Democracy

Human Rights and Democracy

Human Rights and Democracy are fundamental principles in Somalia’s Federal Constitution. The Ministry of Women and Human Rights is responsible for overseeing human rights issues in Somalia. In February 2013, a Human Rights Task Force was established to enhance the protection of individual rights.

In December 2014, the Federal Government of Somalia launched a public awareness campaign and passed the National Child Protection Act, which includes 54 key points. The government also completed legislation for a Human Rights Commission Bill. Somalia is committed to justice and has made significant progress in improving government institutions and enacting legislative reforms.

The Federal Republic of Somalia is a member of several international organizations, including the United Nations, African Union, and Arab League. Other memberships include the African Development Bank, International Civil Aviation Organization, International Finance Corporation, World Federation of Trade Unions, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and World Meteorological Organization.
