Six Takeaways from PM Hamza’s Speech at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79)

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia to the United States shares the key takeaways delivered by His Excellency, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, during his address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized Somalia’s unwavering commitment to peace, multilateralism, and sustainable development in the face of growing global challenges. Below are the most significant points of his address:

1. Global Unity Against Conflict and Humanitarian Crises:

The Prime Minister underscored the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises, particularly in regions such as Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine. Somalia calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities in these areas and stresses the importance of international law and humanitarian aid. We stand firm in supporting the protection of civilian lives and the restoration of peace through collective action.

2. Defending Somalia’s Sovereignty:

In a strong message to the international community, the Prime Minister reiterated Somalia’s sovereign right to defend its territorial integrity, particularly against Ethiopia’s recent provocations. Somalia condemns Ethiopia’s unlawful attempts to undermine Somali sovereignty and urges all nations to uphold the principles of national unity and territorial integrity, which are vital for regional stability.

3. Strengthening Peacekeeping and Security:

Prime Minister Barre highlighted Somalia’s significant progress in its fight against terrorism, notably reclaiming over two-thirds of Al-Shabaab-controlled territory. The success of peacekeeping missions such as AMISOM and ATMIS was also recognized. As Somalia moves forward, we call on the international community to provide sustainable funding to ensure peacekeeping missions can effectively counter threats and support state-building initiatives.

4. Urgent Action on Climate Change:

Somalia is on the front lines of the climate crisis, with extreme weather events wreaking havoc on its people and resources. The Prime Minister stressed the need for simplifying access to international climate funding so that vulnerable nations like Somalia can build resilience and protect their communities. The creation of the Loss and Damage Fund was commended, but the call for equitable access remains critical.

5. Call for Global Institutional Reforms:

The Prime Minister advocated for reforms in the United Nations Security Council and international financial institutions, reflecting the evolving geopolitical realities of today. These reforms, he emphasized, are necessary to ensure that the voices of Africa and other developing regions are adequately represented in global decision-making.

6. Somalia’s Path to Prosperity:

Somalia is poised for economic growth, with vast untapped resources in agriculture, livestock, renewable energy, and the blue economy. The Prime Minister announced drafting a National Transformation Plan to leverage these assets for national stability and prosperity. International investment and partnerships are welcomed as Somalia looks to play a pivotal role in regional trade and development.

As Somalia prepares to take its seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2025, the Prime Minister reaffirmed our nation’s commitment to promoting peace, multilateralism, and international law. Somalia stands ready to contribute to a more equitable and peaceful world order, working in solidarity with the global community.

The Prime Minister called for a renewed spirit of cooperation, reminding us all that the world’s most pressing challenges can only be overcome through unity, shared responsibility, and collective resolve. Somalia is proud to be part of this global mission.
