Returnee Policy
Somalia’s Support for Diaspora and Returnees
Somalia welcomes Somalis from around the world who wish to return home, while keeping national security in mind. The Federal Government recognizes the value of the Diaspora returning and investing in the country. Their sacrifices are helping Somalia improve significantly.
Migration is a global issue that requires various solutions. Illegal migration presents risks to Somali citizens and their families and has caused considerable hardship.
Many Somalis live abroad, enjoying the rights of their adopted countries. Most are well-integrated and contribute positively both to their new communities and to Somalia.
The Somali Federal Government supports the voluntary return of Somali citizens who wish to resettle. For those who return involuntarily, the Government has developed a Cabinet-approved Policy Paper. This policy aims to protect the security progress made in Somalia while respecting the human rights of all citizens and returnees.
The Returnees Policy emphasizes that, although progress is being made, more work is needed to ensure a safe and supportive environment for involuntary returnees.
